Houston, we are ROCK STARS...

As I mentioned in the current section, the site is working!  Today I heard from Brandon Burr, Big Bad Bill and even the man himself, Christopher Tracey.  Big Bad Bill worked up probably the best all-time PF story to date, which of course I had forgotten.  So without further ado here is the retelling from Triple B himself...

Houston , we are ROCK STARS...

I am not sure how the hell they landed this gig but it was the closest thing I could never become to being a ROCK STAR. J Hinds can to me a said “ Dude we got  gig in Houston want to go?”  I pretty sure I said , “ Sure why not “ , but my answer should have been “ how much do I need to pay you.”  This was the furthest the band had traveled at this time and Jarrett needed some help and I figured there would be beer there. They had a lot of gear and we borrowed Jarrett's  older brother's suburban to make the big trip.  We packed up and in typical J Hinds fashion, we were about half a day early to the venue.( Jarrett was always first to arrive)  I don't remember the name of the place but it was unbelievable compared to the crapholes we were used to. Two story, real sound, real lights, and a backstage with green room and all.. man the had made it. The place was a real live concert hall.

They finally open to let us in and we got plastic passes that we hung around our necks like the “real rock stars”. They were apparently having celebrity auction off site... I never made it I was not wanting to leave, It could not get any better than this...  .man I was way wrong. Those plastic passes would take me to places I have only dreamed about. We'll get back to the passes later. So, we ran sound check and sat around drinking. I had little clue to who else was playing, but I knew The Eric Gales Band was the headliner. They were midsize band that were all black an could rock out. Plaid Faction (PF) took the stage on time and no one was there. The auction was not over and the big crowd had not made it over to the venue yet. What a bummer, we thought. Well, they let PF  continue to play and play and play. Well the other bands that were scheduled were  a dress wearing, before dress wearing was cool, band called Greta, and Candlebox. Yea, Candlebox , Seattle grunge bad mother bears. Cool we can get some notice now. The crowd started to filter in and before long the place was packed, like a 1000 people packed. This is when all hell broke loose.

We were sitting out side during Canblebox's set and Kevin Martin, the lead singer, cusses about the opening band taking up all the time . They only got  to  play like two or three songs. PF had played all the songs  they knew and think the even wet back through the list a few songs. So we were sitting outside at the venue the other bands pissed   at PF, this made for and uncomfortable situation, so we did what we did best, found a bartender and gave them our attention.

Well it was about that time the plastic passes made their presence known. I ask a bouncer ' “ Were the hell will this get me?” He said every place in the building, you are unrestricted. I have just been given refuge from our people, i was now one of the elite. I was With Matt “ the Drummer” and we went back to tell all. Me and Matt did not pay for a drink the rest of the night. PF and crew had unlimited access to all. I believe Jarrett and John (J.C.) went to the top to watch the band. Me and Matt walked  around like the kings of the world. This was the beginning of some unbelievable events.

First, did I mention we did not pay for another drink all night. So. Matt and I walked around and consumed a small countries portion of booze, and while walking we ran into a couple people from Waxahachie. Man these people came a long way. Then, we ran into mysterious woman #1. I am still to this day  confused about who she thought I was. Upon seeing me she ran up to me, pointed at me, screamed at me, lifted her shirt, pointed at her tattoo, and then put her tongue down my mouth.  ( Ironical this is how I met my first wife a few years later, and once again thanks, PF). So much for introductions. Well I must have lost in love or she figured out I was no one. Probably the latter but, I really enjoyed free drinks.

Second, did I mention we paid nothing for booze. OK. The real “ rock stars” were everywhere. Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Chris Duarte, King's X, Candlebox, and some that I am sure to have missed. The rest of the evening was made up of chance meetings or nothing more than the dumb luck of a drunk  “roadie” named Bill. So , still in confusion about the lady who thought I was a god of some sort, I think I was either the one she thought tattooed her or  actually on the tattoo, you know I looked like a rock star, ...... fat, broke, and drunk.... well an old one at least.....

OK back to story. I found Jarrett at the top of the in a VIP section. I said hi we sat there and this chick behind me kept grabbing my ass.... I know what you are thinking Jay ....... Jarrett was laughing at me and said “ Dude that is the big  chick from Heart!!!”  WHAT? She is grabbing my ass!!! Well she must have found out i was no one because when I turned to talk she was gone. Well lost in love again...

Third, did I mention we still did not buy........  Well the show was over and me and, I believe it was, Jarrett was back stage and I looked up and here comes Nancy Wilson, the small one from Heart. She looks at us and screams, “ Hey, you two have you seen my fat ass sister?” Well we both sat there bewildered and said, “ Uh, no.” We Look up and here come the two sisters and eye contact was made and the both left us there. Lost the  same love  twice.. . I am a loser.

Fourth,  well, Jarrett had gone somewhere and J.C. was back stage with me and a black guy from upside called at us to see if we could get him in the door up stairs. It was Doug Pinnick from King's X. We said, “ Not sure but we can try” We knocked on the door and it was the green room and me and J.C. walked in like we owned the place. All the band and celebrities were in there, we got autographs and hauled out of there. The rest of the evening was a blur but we ended up at some girls house that had to many people sleeping all over he floor. It looked like Jonestown . We slept there. I not sure anyone knew her name. I think she had the hots for Chris , but it was free lodging.

This is the first installment of the Chronicles of PF. Hope to share good times and bad in future writings. I will finish by saying these group of guys and gals that ran with each other shared years of fun before and after PF. The memories, we share and will soon relive, are  fresh in my memory. I truly enjoyed the people and time we spent together hope this will draw us back, in spirit if nothing else.
